How to Create a QR Code

Create a free QR code in under 60 seconds. Covers URLs, WiFi, design tips, and download formats.

Creating a QR code takes less than a minute on OnestQR. Every code is a free dynamic redirect, so you can edit the destination after printing and track every scan. No signup wall, no subscription paywall, and no forced trial. This guide walks you through the full process from choosing a type to downloading a print ready file.

What You Get With Every OnestQR QR Code

Before you create your first code, it helps to know what is included by default:

  • Dynamic redirect: change the destination anytime without reprinting
  • Free scan tracking with timestamp, device type, country, browser, and operating system
  • Design controls: foreground color, logo, corner styles, and module shapes
  • Download formats: PNG, SVG, and PDF
  • No expiration timer on your codes. See do QR codes expire for details.

All OnestQR codes are dynamic. If you are comparing types, read static vs dynamic QR codes first. For printed materials, dynamic is almost always the right choice.

Step 1: Open the Generator

Go to the QR code creator or start from the free QR code generator landing page. You can create codes as a Guest without an email address. Save your recovery phrase if you want to access your codes later from another device.

There is no paywall between you and a working code. Optional Pro plans add higher limits, but your existing codes keep working if you stay on the free tier.

Step 2: Choose Your QR Code Type

OnestQR supports seven content types. Pick the one that matches what you want people to do when they scan:

  • URL for websites, landing pages, social profiles, and contact pages. Link to your own vCard or contact page instead of a dedicated vCard type. See our vCard QR code page for contact card workflows.
  • Text for plain messages, promo codes, or instructions that appear on screen after scanning
  • Image to display a hosted image when someone scans
  • Email to open the mail app with a pre filled address, subject, and body
  • Maps to open a location in Google Maps or Apple Maps from an address
  • Coords for exact latitude and longitude coordinates
  • WiFi to let guests join your network instantly. Full setup steps are in our WiFi QR code setup guide.

For business cards and networking, a URL pointing to your contact page is the most flexible option. You can update the page anytime while the printed QR stays the same.

Step 3: Enter Your Content

Type or paste your destination into the input field. For URLs, include the full address with https://. For WiFi codes, enter the network name, password, and security type in the WiFi builder panel.

Give your code a clear name in the dashboard. Descriptive names matter when you manage dozens of codes across flyers, packaging, and signage. If you plan to run campaigns, create separate codes per placement so scan tracking tells you which channel performs best.

Step 4: Customize the Design

A plain black and white code works, but branded codes scan better on marketing materials when done correctly. OnestQR lets you adjust:

  • Foreground color (keep strong contrast against the background)
  • Logo placement in the center
  • Corner style and module shape

Read custom QR code design before you push contrast too far. A beautiful code that does not scan wastes your print budget. Pair design choices with the sizing rules in QR code best practices.

Step 5: Download Your QR Code

Export the finished code in the format your project needs:

  • PNG for slides, social posts, and quick digital use
  • SVG for sharp scaling on large format prints and vector workflows
  • PDF for handing off to a print shop with embedded dimensions

Test the code on at least two phones before you print a large batch. Scan it yourself, confirm the destination loads, and check that tracking appears in your dashboard.

Step 6: Print and Deploy

Size the code for the viewing distance. A code on a storefront window needs to be larger than one on a business card. Our best practices guide covers minimum sizes, quiet zones, and placement tips.

For product labels and retail packaging, see QR codes on product packaging. For social campaigns, QR codes for social media explains how to connect print to Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms.

Need Many Codes at Once?

OnestQR does not offer bulk CSV upload yet. If you need hundreds of unique codes for events, asset tags, or product serials, the QR code API is coming soon. Until then, create codes individually in the dashboard or read bulk QR code generation for workflow tips.

After You Publish

Once your code is live, open the dashboard to watch scans roll in. You will see timestamps, device breakdowns, country data, and browser or OS details. For a deeper look at campaign measurement, read the QR code analytics guide.

Remember: you can change the destination URL at any time. Printed a menu QR on 500 table tents? Swap the link to a new menu page without reprinting a single code.
