Static codes are free and permanent. For dynamic codes, know the policy before you print.
QR codes do not have a built in expiration date printed on them. Whether a code stops working depends entirely on what type you created and whether the service behind it is still running.
Static QR codes never expire because the URL is encoded directly in the pattern. Dynamic QR codes depend on a redirect server, so they last as long as that service stays online and your account remains active. At OnestQR, dynamic codes do not expire on a timer and there is no scan limit. If you need analytics on those scans, see how to track QR code scans.
A static QR code is self contained. The destination URL is part of the black and white pattern itself. As long as the URL you encoded still exists on the internet, the code will keep working indefinitely. That is the main reason some people choose static over dynamic. Compare both types in our static vs dynamic guide.
Even if the QR generator you used goes out of business, a static code keeps working. There is no middleman server to shut down.
Dynamic QR codes point to a short redirect URL on a server. When someone scans, the server looks up your current destination and forwards the visitor. That redirect layer is also what makes scan tracking possible.
This means a dynamic code stops working only if:
At OnestQR, we do not put an expiration timer on your codes. Free dynamic codes stay editable and trackable without a subscription. Your codes remain yours.
If you printed a dynamic QR code on 10,000 flyers, you do not want those codes dying after a trial period. That is exactly why OnestQR was built without forced trials or subscription paywalls on existing codes.
Print once. Edit the destination whenever you need to. Track scans for as long as the campaign runs. Not sure dynamic is right for your use case? Start with the static vs dynamic comparison.
Not at OnestQR. There is no scan cap on free or paid plans for normal use. You can monitor volume anytime in the dashboard. See how to track QR code scans for details.
Your existing QR codes keep working. You move to the free tier limits, but your codes are not deleted or deactivated. Scan history stays available too. Read the static vs dynamic guide if you are deciding what to create before upgrading.
The pattern itself does not degrade. The code fails only if the URL it points to is removed or changed without creating a redirect on your website. That is a core difference covered in static vs dynamic QR codes.
Dynamic. You will almost certainly need to update the link eventually, and you will want scan data to measure engagement. See our guide on static vs dynamic QR codes for the full comparison, then set up scan tracking once the sign is up.
Dynamic, trackable, and editable free forever. No signup wall, no forced trial, no ads on your scans.
