How to Track QR Code Scans

Track scans with real time timestamps, device breakdowns, and location data. Set up analytics in minutes.

Scan tracking turns a QR code from a static link into a measurable marketing channel. You can see when people scan, what devices they use, and where traffic comes from. Here is how it works and how to set it up on OnestQR. New to QR types? Read static vs dynamic QR codes first, then check whether QR codes expire before you print a campaign.

Why Tracking Requires a Dynamic QR Code

Static QR codes send the scanner directly to your URL. There is no server in between, so nothing to log. Dynamic QR codes route through a redirect server first, which records each scan before forwarding the visitor.

If you need analytics, you need dynamic. Read our static vs dynamic guide if you are not sure which type to create. Planning a long running print campaign? Pair this with do QR codes expire so your codes stay active for the full run.

What Data Gets Tracked

Every dynamic QR scan on OnestQR records:

  • Timestamp of the scan
  • Device type (mobile, tablet, desktop)
  • Browser and operating system
  • Approximate country derived from IP address

You can view this data in your dashboard for each QR code individually or across your full account. For deeper campaign analysis, see the QR code analytics guide. Dynamic codes must stay active for logging to continue, which is why it helps to understand QR code expiration before you commit to print.

How to Set Up Scan Tracking

  1. Go to the QR code dashboard
  2. Create a new dynamic QR code (all OnestQR codes are dynamic by default). See static vs dynamic if you are comparing types.
  3. Enter your destination URL
  4. Download or print the code
  5. Open the dashboard and click the code to view scan analytics

No extra setup, no tracking pixel, and no third party analytics tool required. Scans are recorded automatically from the first redirect.

Reading Your Analytics

Use scan data to answer practical questions:

  • Did more people scan the poster or the business card?
  • Is traffic spiking after a social post or email campaign?
  • Are scans coming from the city where your event is running?
  • Which menu QR on table 4 gets more use than the bar QR?

Check your dashboard regularly during active campaigns and compare time periods to spot trends. For codes on posters, packaging, or signage that stay up for months, confirm they will keep redirecting with our guide on QR code expiration.

Tips for Better Tracking

  • Create separate QR codes per placement (flyer vs storefront vs packaging) so you know which channel performs
  • Use clear labels in your dashboard to identify each code
  • Test the code yourself before printing large batches
  • Pair scan data with your own conversion metrics on the landing page
  • Choose dynamic over static whenever you need tracking on printed materials

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I track static QR codes?

Not with OnestQR. Static codes bypass our redirect server entirely. Use UTM parameters in the URL for basic web analytics, but you will not get per scan QR data. See static vs dynamic QR codes for why dynamic is required.

Is scan tracking free?

Yes. Scan tracking is included on every dynamic QR code at no extra cost. Your codes also do not expire on a timer. Details in do QR codes expire.

How fast do scans appear in the dashboard?

Near real time. Scans typically show up within seconds of the redirect completing.

Do scans count if I test my own code?

Yes, your own test scans are logged too. Name test codes clearly in the dashboard so you can spot them in recent scan lists. Still picking a code type? The static vs dynamic guide covers the tradeoffs in one place.
